Excerpt from An Introductory Discourse, Delivered Before the Medico-Chirurgical Society of the University of the State of New-York, November 5th, 1816
To point out a few of the causes which have retarded the progress of medical knowledge, and to notice some of the circumstances which have tended to counteract their effects, are the subjects to which your attention is requested on this occasion.
The causes, doubtless, are numerous but I shall confine myself to the consideration of three, which appear to have had the most powerful and extensive in?uence.
