Excerpt from An Introductory Address, Delivered at the Opening of the Session of 1847-8, to the Students of the Memphis Medical College, November 1, 1847
Tennessee was just completing her fiftieth year since she had become a member of the confederated Union of States, compo sing our free and independent Republic, when her Legislators, in their wisdom, granted the Charter for this, the first Medical school ever established within her limits. It is matter for surprise that so long a period, in her prosperous history, should have been permitted to pass by, without her seeming to bestow a solitary thought on the claims of those of her sons who were pursuing the peaceful, and quiet walks of science.
