Metallography may be defined as the microscopical study of polished and etched metallurgical specimens. The examination is carried out not by transmitted light as in the case of many histological and petrological specimens, but. By reflected light; one face of the metal specimen is perfectly polished, then etched by a suitable reagent having a differential effect on the various constituents, and finally examined under the microscope at varying magnifications up to, and in special instances exceeding, one thousand diameters. Macrography may be defined as the study of coarsely polished and etched metallurgical specimens without the aid of a microscope. It is especially useful in the detection of certain qualities or defects, and also enables a general estimation of the constitution of the material to be made.
