Excerpt from An Introduction to He Hindustani Language: Comprising a Grammar, and a Vocabulary, English and Hindustani
The conviction that great advantage is likely to accrue to Candidates for the Indian Service, from the acquisition of some elementary and grammatical acquaintance, with the most common and practically useful dialect of India, previous to their arrival in that country, is now become so prevalent, that argument seems hardly needed to extend or strengthen it. And, as in India a knowledge of the languages of that region, but especially of the Hindustani, is made indispensable to'the attainment of staff, as well as of other extraordinary beneficial appointments, no opportunity - no time should be let slip or lost by those about to go thither, for commencing and continuing the study of that dialect. To facilitate this study, the author or compiler of the following sheets has before prepared and passed through the press, various editions of a Grammar, Dictionary, and two volumes of Selections, the utility of which is best proved by the uninterrupted public countenance shewn them; and, for such learners as can obtain the assistance of a fit instructor, these helps might have sufficed. From the manner, however, in which some persons are obliged, without much previous notice and with little or no instruction in the language, to proceed to India, a compendious work, made as easy as possible, has been judged still requisite for individuals thus circum stanced: and, though some little instruction from a qualified teacher is earnestly recommended where it can be obtained, to guide the reader in the pronunciation and other particulars, yet it is hoped this book may prove essentially useful to the assiduous student, whether aided by others or obliged to rely solely on his own application and dis.
