Publisher's Synopsis

The underlying aim of this book is to rationalize, so far as possible, the wide range of interactions and events which may follow the impact of a gas with a metal surface. The scope extends from elastic collisions, through physical adsorption and chemical adsorption to catalytic processes. As far as is practicable, the book shows by examples the ways in which those actively studying adsorption and catalysis go about their experiments and how they interpret their results. Particular examples have been chosen to illustrate the close conceptual links between adsorption and catalysis, and the use of the experimental techniques most freqently encountered.;The level of discussion is appropriate to students with a general knowledge of thermodynamics, kinetics, and quantum theory and will allow them to reach a position in which they can read and appreciate the substance and much of the detail of original publications in surface studies as well as senior first-degree and beginning graduates in physical and inorganic chemistry, chemical engineering, and materials science.
