Implementations of the lead user method reported on to date have focused on product areas where many users could be expected to have a high level of technical training and skill. Thus, Urban and von Hippel (1988) report on the development of product concepts for process equipment used in the electronics industry, and Bailetti (1990) reports an application in advanced telecommunications products. But many products, even technically sophisticated ones, do n_ot require technical sophistication on the part of their users for example, very little technological understanding is required to operate a microwave oven. And under such circumstances it is quite possible that many or all users of a given product type are not technically skilled.
