Publisher's Synopsis

This classic European play An Enemy of the People tells the story of a man who dares to speak an unpalatable truth, and is punished for it. The town's latest source of pride and income is a newly developed spa bath. The developer and government are expecting a surge in tourism and prosperity from the new baths, but just as the baths are proving successful, Stockmann, the main character, discovers that waste products from the town's tannery are contaminating the waters, causing serious illness amongst the tourists. He is ostracised and the local folks try to drive him out of town. Henrik Ibsen took a somewhat skeptical view of his protagonist, suggesting that he may have gone too far in his zeal to tell the truth.
