Some churches were vindictive, blaming Lincoln's assassination on the whole South, crying for vengeance. Others pleaded for understanding and tolerance. It is easy to assume that the churches reflected the politics of their geographical locations - with Boston the fountain head of bile. This, however, was not the case. Most of the churches represented a point of view at variance with that of the community - a denominational slant which theological psychologists might enjoy explaining.
