Excerpt from An Address to R. W. Horton, Under Secretary of State for the Colonial Department: On the Bill to Be Introduced by Him Into Parliament for Alienating the Clergy Lands in Upper Canada
The first clause, which is the thirty-sixth of the act, gives a general authority to His Majesty to make a permanent appropriation of lands in the said provinces for the support and mainte nance of a protestant clergy and this appropriation is fixed at the one-seventh part of the lands grant ed, or to be afterwards granted.
The second clause directs that the rents, profits, or emoluments which may arise from such lands, shall be applicable solely to the maintenance and support of a protestant clergy within the province.
