Excerpt from An Address on the Present Condition, Prospects, and Duties of the Medical Profession: Delivered Before the Members of the Massachusetts Medical Society, at the Annual Meeting, May 26, 1841
Its salutary results are seen in our systems of education; in the improved modes of teaching that prevail in our Schools, both public and private; in the introduction of clinical instruction at our hospitals; the important changes that have taken place in the modes of studying disease, and in the Opinions respecting it; and numerous discoveries in physi ology and pathology highly creditable to the science, and of great benefit to mankind; discoveries, which, among the many uncertainties of the medical art, and the difficulties that oppose the seeker after medical truth, are highly gratifying; and may be regarded, at the same time, as the rich reward of philosophical investigation, and the prelude to still greater achieve ment.
Such are some of the general modifications imparted to the medical profession by the intellectual character of the period with which it is associated. It may not be an unprofitable use of the present hour, to take a cursory View of some of the acknowledged improvements which have resulted from it, and which constitute the true boast of modern medicine and surgery.
