Publisher's Synopsis
Excerpt from An Address Preparatory to Opening the Department of the Arts and Sciences in the University of Maryland: Delivered on Behalf of the Trustees
All political improvement in the condition of man, is to be attained, only by ennobling his cha racter and his nature, through the means of educa tion. - The materials for this purpose, are to be found in the cultivation of the higher intellectual endowments of our being - Those, who apply no other standard to the worth of the intellectual sci ences, than the time spent, and labour bestowed in acquiring them, are but little competent, to estimate the silent work of a refined and cultivated literature, upon the individual and social condition of man.
