With the downfall of the Commonwealth in England, the Proprietary government of Maryland was resumed; and upon the full tide of its happy rule, civil, quiet and equal participation in the rights and powers of government was restored, and Maryland again became the abiding place of peace and happiness, the sure attendants of good govern ment. For thirty years that peace remained unbroken, that happiness undiminished, that government united.
