Publisher's Synopsis
Excerpt from An Address
Were these old College groves inhabited by the Dryads and Hamadryads of classic fable, they could tell many a pleasing, suggestive or marvellous story of things which they had seen, heard or imagined, in Sunlight or in shade or beneath the silent stars in the hours gone by forever.
To me old Gerrard Hall has much of the sanctity of a baptistery. There I often heard lessons of divine truth and wisdom from venerated lips that taught me science and literature in the class-room, and spoke many words of kindness and sympathy in daily intercourse. There I received the honors and the parting blessings of my Alma Mater, as she sent me forth clothed in the strong panoply which she had wrought, to struggle for fortune and fame in the battlefields of busy life, and to perform the duties which I owed to myself, my fellow man, my country, my God and truth.
