Excerpt from An Abridgment of the Church History of New England, From 1601 to 1804: Containing a View of Their Principles and Practice, Declensions and Revivals, Oppression and Liberty; With a Concise Account of the Baptists in the Southern Part of America, and a Chronological Table of the Whole
Many of the new things in thls volume were ta 'ken from Winthrop's journal, publiihed in 1790; from the publications of the Hifiorical Society at Bolton, and from a book which I borrowed of them, called The Bloody Tenet, of which I know not of another copy in America. The accounts of our fouthern States were collefted partly when I was in North Carolina and Virgrma, m 1789, and partly from other fources of intelligence. And in the experience of two centuries, in this great coun try, we may fee a great variety of different fchemes of government that have been tried, which may di rect our choice to what is right, and to avoid, evil ways efpecially to guard againit all cruelty, deceit and Violence. Thefe things are humbly prefented to the public, by their aged friend.
