Excerpt from Alphabetical List of Ship Registers, District of Barnstable, Massachusetts, 1814-1913: Compiled From Original Documents Stored in the New Bedford Custom House
United States Customs District VII with the port of Barnstable as headquarters, was established by act of Congress in 1789. Comprising all of Barnstable County (cape God) the district was nearly seventy'milos in length, and had an average width of six miles, indented with harbors and inlets on both sides, and included eight ports of entry Barnstable, Provincetown, 'wellfleet, Sandwich, Falmouth, Hyannis, Chatham, and Dennis. Customs revenues having gradually diminishod with the decreasing importance of fishing and other maritime ctivities on the cape, customs district vii'uc s consolidated With district IV in July 1913, during a nation-wide reorganization of the Customs Service, and Barnstable passed into the jurisdiction of the collector at Boston as a subport. The office of deputy collector of customs in Barnstable was finally abolished a few years later, and the customhouse was turned over to the Post Office Department February 15, 1919.
