Publisher's Synopsis
In the wake of a near disaster, Matthew Calamos, diagnosed with a dangerous condition responsible for slaughtering Alkalians throughout history, once again finds himself feared or hated by his fellow students and others. With little choice he agrees to be transferred from the confederacy's national college to a military academy within the northern state of Corrasin, a reluctantly voluntary exile from the friends he has made and the things they have shared. But in a land of cold seas and warm spirits, his morals and faith will face agonizing challenges.
Meanwhile, the friends and rivals Matt leaves behind at the college begin to change. As some suffer in the fallout from Matt's exile, others attempt to take advantage of them. Champions become corrupt, friendships fracture, and redemptions arise as a new danger, hidden in the shadows of Alkalian society, reaches out to threaten all within its grasp.
