Nothing exciting ever happens in the school holidays - until one sunny day, sister and brother Zoe and Paul, with Mum and Pluto the dog, decide to take a walk to play by the stream and explore the woods. Zoe brings Goldie, her beloved rag doll with the golden hair. They wander into the mysterious Withergrass Wood, with its strange and scary knarly trees, where they meet a very odd man in a fantastic hat who introduces himself as Alginon. He tells them about the fabulous Withergrass Bird.
