In the retrospect of a long life, not the mercies alone recur to the memory, but the sins and the mistakes; the feet sometimes 'well-nigh slipping, ' the offences great and little, the self-pleasing, the inconsiderateness for others, and the grievous neglects both personal and ministerial. These constrain the frequent confession Mine iniquities are more than the hairs of my head, therefore my heart faileth me'; yet grace much more abounding inspires the thanksgiving: 'how pre cions are Thy thoughts unto me, O God! How great is the sum of them! If I should count Mam, they are more in' number than the sand.' In the unknown depths of His love the God of Peace 'casts all our sins behind His back, ' whilst His own works He has made to be remembered At times, indeed, we can see little else but sin.
