The Aldabra Tortoise is one of the largest tortoises in the world, with males reaching a size of up to 4 feet (1.2 meters) in length and weighing as much as 550 pounds (250 kilograms). Females are smaller than males, typically growing to around 3 feet (0.9 meters) in length and weighing less. Their thick, dome-shaped shells are typically dark gray to brown, providing protection from predators and harsh environmental conditions.
The species is renowned for its longevity. Aldabra Tortoises can live for over 100 years, making them one of the longest-living land animals. Their remarkable lifespan and slow rate of growth contribute to their appeal as pets, as many owners enjoy the prospect of forming a bond with a creature that can potentially outlive them.
