Both treated the economics of the farm and the house hold from the private rather than the public point of view, though the question of providing means for the support of the state was also discussed. In modern times, however, the public point of view has come to be more emphasized, mainly because the early mediaeval and mod ern economists perceived that the state could secure ample means only when industry in general was prosperous. The question for the economist and the statesman there fore became, how to make the whole country prosperous. This, I take it, is still the problem. We are still looking at the agricultural industry from the public point of view. We are concerned to know the conditions which will make for national prosperity through the prosperity of its most important industry or group of industries, namely, agriculture. However, this is merely the expression of an individual Opinion which may serve as a text. We shall doubtless get real enlightenment from the remarks Of the gentlemen who carry on the discussion.
