To understand anger, one must appreciate the role that emotions play in serving human adaptation. Anger (rage) and fear (terror) are generally viewed as the two basic emotions that support our behavior in times of stress and emergency. They are part of a biological response system that has come to be built into each human animal by Darwinian evolution to enhance the chances of survival. They alert us to the presence of danger, and prepare us to meet that danger through mechanisms of flight or fight.
