Affective disorders are probably the most investigated and best established syndromes in adult psychiatry. However, only recently have investigators turned their attention to depressions and manias in children and adolescents. Focusing on clinical, research and management aspects, this work collects in one volume, the essentials of what is known currently about depression and mania in children and adolescents.;This practical volume is divided into five parts. Section one deals with the phenomenology of affective disorders in children and adolescents. Issues regarding classification and diagnostic criteria are reviewed; case studies are presented. Section two covers the issues of alternative forms of depression; tying in common school-related problems to affective disorders. Section three covers in detail various assessment instruments. Section four on possible aetiologic factors, concentrates on those biological areas that are the subject of most of the current aetiologic research.
