This book contains 28 articles by (mostly young) scientists from more than 10 different geoscience institutes of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. The articles were originally selected and recommended by the respective institutes, but only accepted after critical review. The scope of these papers is broad and covers a wide spectrum of fields in modern solid earth sciences, including continental dynamics, environmental geology, geology of mineral and energy resources, as well as novel methods and techniques. The reported results reflect some of the latest developments of basic research in the field of solid earth sciences in China --- new opinions, discoveries and methods are introduced and discussed. This book provides thus a unique insight in the latest developments in solid earth sciences in China.
