Publisher's Synopsis
This collection of papers is from the 1995 TMS Annual Meeting and Exhibition held in Las Vegas, Nevada, February 12-16, 1995. It discusses new developments in environmentally-benign coatings practice, processing and materials, particularly in the area of thin film materials. Materials covered include replacements for electrolytic chrome, organic coatings for corrosion inhibition, diamond-like materials, nitrides and carbides. An emphasis is placed on environmentally-sound processing, and on new developments in existing technologies, such as sol-gel thermal spray and sputter deposition.;Three recently developed vacuum-based surface technologies in the field of surface engineering are also covered: plasma source ion implantation (PSII), which overcomes line-of-sight limitations of ion implantation; ion beam surface treatment (IBEST), which overcomes the inherent depth limitations of ion beam processing and is capable of modifying surfaces to a depth of 2-20 microns; and the jet vapour deposition (TM) process, which combines many of the attributes of physical and/or chemical vapour deposition with the potential for high rates and economy.
