Excerpt from A Vocabulary of the Snake or Shoshone Dialect
The following Vocabulary of this tribe of Indians was pre pared by Mr. Joseph A. Gebow, interpreter for Dr. Forney, the Superintendent of Indian Affairs. It embraces nearly six hundred words or expressions, and Mr. Gebow presents it to the public as almost a perfect compilation of that dialect. Mr. Gebow is himself an old mountaineer, having been among the Indians and in the mountains for fourteen years; and he pre sents this little offering as a sample of Rocky Mountain liter ature of the lone Indian, who is fast passing away, hoping that.
