Excerpt from A View of China for Philological Purposes: Containing a Sketch of Chinese Chronology, Geography, Government, Religion and Customs, Designed for the Use of Persons Who Study the Chinese Language
IN preportion asa Person is ignorant of the History, Geography, Political and Reli gions Institutions, Local Customs and Opinions of a Country, is the Language of that Country dificult to him; and his liability to mistake the words and idiom of the Language, is in the same proportion. Hence, what is perfectly clear and explicit to a Native, is often dark and ambiguous to a Foreigner. To the latter, words and sentences do not call up the same associations as to the former; which circumstance causes either obscurity or error. There is a dificulty also in defining words by alluding to Insti tutions and Customs, respecting which the Reader is as yet uninformed.
