But the alterations and additions are too numerous and many of them too trivial to be all noticed here. The foot notes, however, after page 1 7 are all new. Perhaps it is still necessary to crave the same indulgence from the reader as is done in the preface to the first edition.
It may be pr0per to add that various other particulars connected with the subject will be found in the articles Steam and Steam Navigation; which, besides forming parts of the Encyclopedia, have been published toge ther in a separate volume. The like may be said of the article Railways. It is also principally in these depart ments that the more recent improvements connected with steam have taken place. Descriptions of the latest will be found in the scientific journals.
