Excerpt from A Treatise on Rocks, Rock-Weathering and Soils
As will be readily perceived by those at all acquainted with the general literature, the publications of the U. S. Geological Survey, the U. S. National Museum, and the Bulletins of the Geological Society of America have been drawn upon to furnish materials for illustration. The writer is under special obliga tion to Dr. Milton Whitney of the U. S. Department of Agri culture for many of the mechanical analyses given, and to Mr. L. H. Merrill of the Maine Experiment Station for numerous criticisms and suggestions.
To the late Dr. G. Brown Goode he is indebted for permis sion to utilize photographs and specimens forming a part of the collections of the National Museum and also for electro types of sundry plates and figures in its publications.
