Publisher's Synopsis
Excerpt from A Thackeray Library
Original drawings by Thackeray are becoming more valuable every year, and this tendency increases as they inevitably become more rare. The examples treasured up by his daughters have finally been dispersed and many of the best of these have been acquired by public libraries or museums, or have been gathered into large private collections where they will probably remain for many years if not forever.
Another object of the collector's longing is in the numerous letters which Thackeray wrote, for he was the most appealing letter-writer of his age, as entertaining as Horace Walpole, butwithout his ill-natured gossip. His handwriting was clear and attractive, and he frequently added a sketch that illumined the whimsical humor of the text. Examples of this trait are with reason justly prized, and this collection offers an opportunity to buyers that will not often occur again.
