Research studies have illustrated the importance of innovation for growth in economies and in industries. On the micro or firm level, innovation by others has been shown to be of potential harm to the non-innovating firm. The relationship, however, between creating a technological advantage and creating a competitive advantage for the innovating firm remains unclear. The difficulties arising from not innovating have been well documented, but the advantages for a firm that has innovated have not been empirically studied. The difficulty in undertaking a study of the significance of a technological advantage is determining if such an advantage indeed exists. The purpose of this paper is to test a methodology for rating technological advantage. This study will analyze quality of technology in an industry that is considered to be technology-driven because the technology embodied in the products is sophisticated and rapidly changing.
