Publisher's Synopsis
The Ribble estuary exhibits enhanced levels of radioactivity arising from authorized discharges of radioactive effluent made by British Nuclear Fuels plc (BNFL) Springfields and from other discharges, principally from BNFL Sellafield, made to the Irish Sea. In 1991 HMIP commissioned the School of Ocean Sciences of the University of Wales, Bangor to survey the radionuclide activities over a 16 month period and provide a radiological assessment. The results of this work are detailed in two reports. This first report presents the results of the survey including details of activity concentrations in sediments, their distribution throughout the estuary and the influence of estuarine dynamics on their redistribution. The second report (ISBN 0 11 753038 7) presents the results of the radiological assessment.
