Excerpt from A Statement of the Claims of Charles T. Jackson, M.D., To the Discovery of the Applicability of Sulphuric Ether to the Prevention of Pain in Surgical Operations
Two distinct claims are to be considered. The first is, the discovery by Dr. J ackson, that by sulphuric ether, a state of general unconsciousness may be safely and speedily induced, of brief duration, and followed by rapid and entire recovery from its effects. The question is not, Whether he discovered the induction of a state of insensibility danger ous, and in other respects objectionable; the insensibility produced by ether was so considered by physiologists be fore Dr. Jackson made his observations but whether he discovered that this opinion is erroneous, and that a state of unconsciousness may be produced, characterized by the qualities above described, and especially its safety.
The second claim is, that Dr. J ackson made the discovery of the applicability of sulphuric ether for the prevention of pain in surgical operations; and that he caused the applica tion of it to be made in such a manner, and under such circumstances, that the credit is due to him of having made the application, in the high and true sense of the term. The second claim is the real question at issue between Dr. J ackson and Mr. Morton.
