I say the essence, meaning only the great currents of thought, which had received a decisive direction towards a certain quarter, in each principal epoch of development, notwithstanding the apparently oppo site bent of minor tributaries, of isolated thoughts and opinions whose true value and significance can only be estimated at a later date when a new theory of the universe has been accepted. However high the summit of a tree may reach, its root is in the soil beneath, and philosophers too are children of their age and can never wholly free themselves from the ideas, convictions, and prejudices which surround them: their thoughts are borne along with the torrent of the general thought.
