Judgments. As it was foretold of them three thousand years ago, the Lord has scattered them among all nations from one and of the earth even unto the other? And they are become an astonish ment, a proverb, and a bye-word among all na tional without a King, and without a Prince, and without an Image, and without an Ephod, and without a T emphz'm]: In the destruction of their: magnificent temple, once the wonder of the world; in the dissolution of their civil polity; and, still moxe remarkably, m their dispersion and calamitous sufi'e1ings, they are fulfilling their own ancient piophecies, and confirmlng the truth of the Scriptures to the confusion of Infide'ls, ahd to the instruction of all who behold them.(e) These adectmg lustances of the exemplaryupun ishments of the'wicked and fimpenitent, ' se lected fiom the sacred writingsxac'quire force and impress ion, lrom the circumstances of the passing times. The nationsof; Europe, that abounding theatre of great action, and that clas sic ground of science, ingenuity, and enterprise, have suffered, and are still enduring unutterable woes. Those measures, and tragical events, which appear to us so calamitous and so much calculated to wring the heart of sensibility, are assuredly fulfilling and accomplishing the designs and purposes of Providence. Could we com prehend the chain of events, and trace them in their causes, connexion and consequences, we could not fail to discover, that in their revolu tionary and af?ictive vicissitudes, they a1e ex piating their heinous and daring sins, their.
