After the writer undertook to collect materials for these historical sketches, he found it more difficult than he expected, to obtain information on which reliance could be placed. In many instances traditional accounts did not agree. In such cases he has taken those facts, which appeared to him most clearly substantiated. The labour of collecting and writing has necessarily occupied considerable time. He found, also, that circumstances unthought of, were occasionally coming to light and on these accounts he felt the more willing to delay the publication, although some of his friends, he had reason to fear, would grow impatient.
