The Hayward family have been settled in Wiltshire for some centuries. In the registers of the parishes of Beechingstoke and North Newton, which record as far back as 1573, members of this family appear as the owners and occupiers of their own small properties in the neighbourhood. The grandfather of Abraham Hayward was the owner and occupier of a small property at Hilcott, North Newton, which in his day used to be known as Some time after the death of the grandfather, his son Joseph Hayward, the father of Abraham Hayward, sold the property at Hilcott, and went to live at Wilton, near Salisbury.* The Hilcott property has since been bought back by the Hayward family, and is now in the possession of Hayward, Esq., distant cousin of Mr. A. Hayward.
