When Lady Frederica Drummond falls pregnant with another man's child while her husband is away at war, she knows she must give up the baby to keep her marriage. In despair, she turns to her old nanny, Robbie, and begs her to bring Sarah up as her own in her cottage at Kirby Hall, where Frederica can watch her grow up. It is years later that the troubles start.
