No apology is needed for in?icting another Spanish text book ou the public, as there are very few books published in this country for the study of the language, and of those few there is only one which adopts the Reform Method, and that one is only suitable for children. Professional teachers have troubled themselves very little about Spanish, which ranks only second in importance to English as a commercial language. Whilst valuable crumbs of know ledge can be gleaned from the Spanish textbooks that have been published of recent years, they are based on no intelligible educational principles.
This book is written for adolescents and adults, as Spanish is seldom studied by young children. -it therefore avoids the hackneyed language of the class room, but presents advanced ideas in a simple form. From the second lesson onwards it makes use of the vocabulary and ideas of the commercial world, without, however, neglecting the literary Side of a language so rich in the masterpieces of literature. Part II. Gives the student in simple language some idea of the geography, products, and industry of Spanish speaking countries, which should be easily read by the student when he has mastered the first ten lessons. These are followed by extracts from Spanish newspapers and magazines, and cover a wide vocabulary.
To enable-the private student to use the book, a complete vocabulary containing many common idioms has been added, and a summary of the Grammar is given in English in Part III. There is now a pretty general consensus of opinion in favour of a compromise between the old methods and the new.
