John R. Ayer writes September, October and November, 1883, I taught a country school in (hanover) Sprague, Conn. I did not find this work conducive to my good health or peace of mind, so accepted an offer of a cousin to be general assistant in a large fruit raising enterprise.' I worked for him for one year, closing January 1, 1885, part of the time as superintendent at one of his orchards.
