Publisher's Synopsis

This work of fiction, set in the small fictional Australian country town of Acacia, tells the story of one day in the life of the town, a specific day when a series of shootings occur. Unknown to the residents, an unstable criminal has been placed in a witness protection program in their town. On this particular day, his anxiety and paranoia lead him to start shooting random members of the community. Through a series of separate but interconnected stories, the events that led each of his victims to being in the wrong place at the wrong time are revealed. The stories of the victims and the survivors and those connected to them by family or friendship, are explored against the backdrop of the town. The multiplicity of connections, both ongoing and transient, plunge the reader into the enormity of an ordinary day suddenly de-railed.

A Quiet Day in the Country raises questions about contemporary life in Australia, particularly life in country towns, but its themes are universal, including the challenge of daily lives suddenly overturned by unexpected and unpredictable forces, and of the impact of public decisions on private lives.
