How to detect disease is a thoroughly worked problem, but how to cure disease is one that has received too little attention from scientific physicians. The truth of this remark, which occurs in the British and Foreign medico-chirurgical Review for January, 1869, impresses itself more forcibly upon me every year that I practise my profession. In revising a book like the present, where one is necessarily carried over a vast amount of medical literature, European and American, one cannot fail to be struck with the changes that have occurred in the text-books say of the last ten years.
