We whose fathers have shed their blood in defence Of civil and religious liberty should be dastards, indeed, did we suffer the memory Of their struggles to be buried in oblivion. The Author shall deem himself well rewarded for his labour in the com pilation Of this work if, while recounting the deeds of the dead fathers, he should awaken to a brighter glow the sacred ?ame of patriotism in the bosoms of the living sons.
