HE following chapters are an attempt to put some practical rules and anecdotes into colloquial language.
Almost all that has hitherto been published on Art, either at home or abroad, has been written in a manner which may almost be called poeti cal, so far does it differ from the plainness of what is practical. I hope I have succeeded in showing, on simple grounds, the advantages of cultivating a love for art, especially art in the family and household. I am under the persuasion that common-sense arguments may be found powerful with many people to whom high ?ights are unpleasant. Art is therefore pleaded for on such grounds as the manifest prudence of making collections, the civilising effects of taste upon young persons, the plea sure of pursuing an object, and, generally.
