Not calculated for, and fuited to thefe pofes, it will never produce the effect required. But, 'as every fyfiem {hould be fupported and governed in itfelf, by particular laws or principles, that 1t may mun the appellation of a whimfical or fpeculative perform ance, I have therefore obferved that rule, hoping it may ferve, as well to recommend, as to give weight to the plan I have chofen. And' as this performance, which I now take the liberty of ofi'ermg, is but an at tempt calculated to point out how the military, like all other fciences, may be refcued from caprice, and cita bliihed upon principle; and as I am led to believe, that it is the firl't of 1ts kind that has ever been written, 71 therefore hope for the greater indulgence, and that it will to the candid fuggefi an apology for any defects or inaccur acies it may contain there being throughout.
