Although it is often impossible to trace the connec tion, all infection must ultimately be derived either from a patient or a carrier. The latter is a person who harbours in some part of his body the causative micro organism of a particular disease. He may have recently suffered from the disease himself without being able to get rid of the germs, in which case he is spoken of as a convalescent carrier. He may, on the other hand, have harboured the micro-organisms without contract ing the disease although perfectly able to communicate it to others, and in this case he is termed a healthy carrier.
