Other collections with the same strong theological ?avor were owned by Parson Hooker who left behind him �300 worth of books in an estate of Parson Wareham, �82 worth in an estate of and Rev. Ebenezer Pemberton, whose books numbering lots, were described in the first auction catalogue compiled in New England. In nearly all of the libraries of the seventeenth century the ancient Classics - Latin and Greek were well represented while little attention was given to English literature.
Of all of the libraries of the early religious leaders that of Cotton Mather, characterized by Dunton as the glory of New England, was the largest and most valuable. It consisted of over printed volumes and contained many manuscripts and its value was estimated at The majority of these volumes, like the smaller libraries of Harvard and Brewster, were of a religious, theological and philosophical character.
