Publisher's Synopsis
A key to useful Australian acacias for the seasonally dry tropics provides a guide to widely planted Australian tropical Acacia species. The key includes a wealth of pictorial information and guides to related species and hybrids. It provides a concise key to the most likely Australian species to be encountered in the tropics and fills a gap in the resources currently available to field foresters in the tropics.;As currently defined Acacia represents a cosmopolitan genus of 1200-1300 species contained in three subgenera: subgenus Acacin, subgenus Aculeiferum and subgenus Phyllodinae (Maslin 1995). The species treated here are all in subgenus Phyllodinae, a group containing in excess of 900 species.;This key is to 31 tropical species of Acacia commonly grown or trialed for wood production or multipurpose use over the past 20 years. Other documented uses of these Acacia include gum, perfume, tannin, fodder, charcoal production and pharmaceuticals. The book is not an exhaustive key to Australian acacias but it contains many references for those who wish to pursue further reading. Characters in the key are described in both words and pictures and the text is aimed at the non-specialist user.
