Publisher's Synopsis
For the first time in human history more than half the world's population lives in urban areas. Future growth is predicted to be mainly amongst urban populations in low and middle income countries, particularly those of Asia and Africa. One of the most important issues arising from this growth in urbanization concerns water: the world will need more efficient water management systems under increasingly complex social environments and uncertain natural conditions due to climatic variability. This volume explores the relationship between water and urbanization from both a historic and comparative perspective, and especially with how the struggle and ability to utilize water sources have encouraged urban expansion.
