In 1 696 the Reverend Thomas Bray, D.D., a graduate of Oxford, accepted from the Bishop of London the appointment as his com missary in Maryland. For four years after his appointment Mr. Bray remained in England endeavoring to arouse the consciences of his countrymen to their duty toward their brethren across the seas. He finally departed for Maryland where he remained but a few months.
