Ryan's family of travellers return to the safe haven of Appleby only for him to be warned that the vengeful ghost of an executed gamekeeper is at large. Appleby, autumn 1967. After being banished from Tyndale, North Yorkshire by the angry villagers, the Gypsies head north and set up camp in Appleby, a traditional meeting place for the Travelling community, especially in June when the annual Horse Fair is held. Forming an unlikely alliance, the two boys investigate the hauntings, and using local history books, uncover the legend of Wicked Willie, a vicious gamekeeper from Appleby Castle who was executed on the gallows for theft and murder over one hundred years before. The two-novice ghost-hunters finally come face to face with the demon in St Lawrence's Church graveyard. Wicked Willie quickly overpowers them, and just as the boys are about to be devoured, a hooded figure appears out of the darkness... An excellent interactive reading book for schools and families.
